Just for kicks and to test out my design abilities, I decided to build a gas fire pit in the backyard. The one you are looking at below is molded as part of the cement in the center of the patio. Then I had the Sheet Metal Guy custom fabricate the stainless steel insert where the fire burner will sit. The crushed glass is poured on top of the burners to hide the burner pipes and accent the fire pit. The rectangular fire pit measures about 4feet wide x 6feet long x 1.5 feet high so it's a pretty big center piece. You can use it as a fire pit or converted as a table. As it sits, the side edges around the sheet metal pan measure about 1.5 Feet wide so there's plenty of room for guests to put drinks, kick up their legs or even a plate if they wanted to. It's a very contemporary design that gives an "awe factor" to an otherwise traditional cement-slab patio.
